Why did we choose Molicel?
The MOLICEL® brand has been a leader in the battery industry for more than 40 years, specializing in the ultra-high-power cylindrical battery market segment; its deep technology and fast-growing production capabilities are recognized by global OEMs in motorsports and high-end automobiles, aircraft, healthcare, appliances, and power tools, as well as being the top supplier of batteries to the electric skateboarding world.
Molicel P42A
All-purpose battery - the pinnacle of power and performance. With a minimum capacity of 4,000 mAh a typical capacity of 4,200 mAh, and an amazing 45 amp maximum continuous discharge rating, this battery is far superior to others. While continuous use at the maximum discharge rate may shorten its overall lifespan, this battery easily meets the demand. When examining discharge capacity charts, this battery takes more hits and lasts longer than any other battery. It offers an unrivaled combination of high capacity and insane discharge/emptying capabilities.
High Discharge Current: The Molicel P42A utilizes a rated continuous 20A discharge and over 50A pulse discharge.
Fast charging: 2C+ fast charging
High Stability: Excellent low and high-temperature performance (-40°C~45°C)
Very low impedance: excellent cycle life and consistent performance
Recognition from McMurtry Sperling, the fastest electric car in 2022:
Molicel provides niche, advanced, energy-dense, high charge and discharge multiplier batteries for applications such as sports cars, motorcycles, vertical takeoffs and landings, aerospace, and heavy-duty tools.McMurtry Automotive is an industry leader in total battery design and battery integration technologies, with a proven track record in thermal management, busbar design, structural integrity, safety, and overall battery pack geometry ( including pending IP protection). The combination of the two is a natural fit for realizing high performance in electric vehicles, and the result is arguably the highest power and energy density battery on the market.
When embarking on the delivery of a breakthrough project - the ultra-compact, sub-one-ton, 1,000-horsepower-per-ton Spéirling railcar - McMurtry engineers evaluated Molicel's products and found industry-leading performance in terms of power density and C-rate capability. Since then, Molicel's batteries have been powering the McMurtry Sperling, which made its debut at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed and has just set a record for the event in 2022.
Thomas Yates, Director:
"The battery pack is a decisive element of our unique vehicle concept. The battery capacity therein has a first-order effect on the mass and packaging volume of the entire car as well as on the apparent power output of the drive motors. Therefore, at the heart of the car, we have spared no effort in delivering a high-power, compact, and lightweight battery. the Molicel battery offers a competitive advantage in achieving these goals and powers the novel performance that the world has just witnessed at Goodwood. I also look forward to integrating the next generation of Molicel cells into our future products."
The battery pack was designed and manufactured by the McMurtry team in the UK using P26A cylindrical lithium-ion Molicel products, whereas GHOST utilizes higher grade P42A cylindrical lithium batteries with a higher P42A upper limit, which provides a 29% increase in maximum discharge current over the P26A, which is why the 12S2P battery packs are capable of achieving a 25-mile range.
The key requirements for the battery are high power, low impedance, and fast charge/discharge.
One of the advantages of low-impedance batteries is the relatively small temperature rise during high current consumption, which simplifies the thermal design of the battery pack at the system level, resulting in a smaller, lighter final battery pack.
Molicel's future developments include higher power batteries capable of delivering 5C fast charging (6 minutes = 50% capacity charged). These may appear in future GHOST and customer applications.
